Chicago’s Florenza Marble & Granite Corp. has been hit with a $1 million fine by OSHA following a severe health crisis involving a 31-year-old employee who required a double lung transplant due to advanced silicosis. An inspection in February 2024 revealed that the company’s silica dust levels were up to six times above permissible limits, with inadequate dust control measures and improper respirator use.

OSHA’s findings included:

  • Eight egregious willful violations

  • Four willful violations

  • Twenty serious violations

The company’s safety protocols were deemed insufficient, and it had been denied workers' compensation insurance due to its safety violations. Citations included failure to implement medical surveillance for silica exposure, inadequate dust controls, and lack of proper training on personal protective equipment.
