Three former Indiana University (IU) basketball players have filed an amended class-action lawsuit, accusing former team physician Dr. Brad Bomba Sr. of sexual abuse during routine physical examinations. The plaintiffs—John Flowers (1981-1982), Haris Mujezinovic (1995-1997), and Charlie Miller (1994-1998)—allege that Bomba performed invasive and medically unnecessary prostate exams during their time with the Hoosiers.
The lawsuit also implicates longtime head men’s basketball trainer Tim Garl, accusing him of being complicit in the alleged abuse by failing to report or address it.
Key allegations include:
- Medically unnecessary exams: The plaintiffs claim the prostate exams were inappropriate and conducted without valid medical justification.
- Complicity by university officials: The suit alleges IU officials, including Garl, were aware of Bomba's conduct and failed to act, enabling the abuse to continue.
- Violations of constitutional and Title IX protections: The plaintiffs argue that IU’s inaction violated their rights to safety and protection under federal law.
Dr. Bomba served as IU’s team physician for nearly three decades and also held prominent roles, including working with the U.S. Olympic basketball team. The complaint claims his alleged misconduct was an open secret among players and that university officials ignored complaints.
The lawsuit seeks damages for all former players who may have been victimized, aiming to hold IU accountable for failing to intervene. IU and its representatives have not commented publicly on the lawsuit.
