NHTSA Warns of Dangerous Faulty Air Bags Causing Injuries and Deaths
- StewartWood Injury Lawyers
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a warning about faulty replacement air bags causing serious injuries and deaths in the United States. These low-cost, substandard inflators are often installed after previous crashes and have been found to malfunction in subsequent accidents, leading to metal fragments spraying into drivers and passengers.
According to the NHTSA, consumers, especially those purchasing used cars, should exercise caution. The agency advises against opting for suspiciously cheap replacements, stating, “If it’s too good to be true, it likely is — and it could be deadly.” They recommend obtaining a vehicle history report and having a trusted mechanic inspect air bags to ensure genuine parts are used.
This concern follows extensive investigations into Takata air bag inflators, which were prone to exploding due to exposure to moisture. Over 100 million Takata inflators have been recalled globally, with more than 67 million recalled in the United States by over 20 automakers.
