Iowa State Settles Rowing Tragedy Lawsuit for $3.5M

The family of Yaakov Ben-David, who drowned during an Iowa State Crew Club outing in 2021, have reached a $3.5 million settlement with the State of Iowa and Iowa State University. This comes after a lawsuit filed by Ben-David's parents accusing the university and state of negligence in the accident. The settlement avoids a trial and admits no wrongdoing by either party. An earlier investigation revealed this was the first time Ben-David and another rower who died in the accident had been on the water, and the team hadn't practiced in over a year. The report also found some members weren't dressed appropriately for the cold weather and that the practice should have been cancelled due to wind gusts. Emails obtained during the investigation showed a crew member raising safety concerns a year prior to the accident, including a lack of proper safety protocols and missing equipment.
