Nashville Deputy Fire Marshal Awarded $270,000 After Discrimination Suit
- StewartWood Injury Lawyers
A Nashville deputy fire marshal, Maggie Lawrence, won a lawsuit against the Nashville Fire Department after a jury found she was discriminated against based on her age and gender. Lawrence, who was passed over for a promotion to Fire Marshal in favor of a younger male colleague, will receive over $270,000 in damages and back pay. The lawsuit argued that Fire Chief William Swann favored promoting from within a "good ole boys club" and retaliated against Lawrence when she complained. Lawrence, a 30-year veteran with the department, had never received disciplinary action. The Fire Department maintains they promote the most qualified personnel and disagrees with the jury's decision. They haven't decided yet if they will appeal.
