Study: Aging Drivers Pose Growing Risk on Roads
- StewartWood Injury Lawyers
A new study reveals a significant surge in the number of licensed drivers over age 70 and a corresponding increase in fatal crashes involving them. Analyzing U.S. Department of Transportation data from 2013 to 2022, the report found that drivers 70 and older now account for one-quarter of all fatal crashes in the U.S. The number of drivers in this age group jumped from 23.6 million to 34 million, representing 14.5% of all drivers in 2022. Fatal crashes involving these drivers increased by 23.6% during the same period, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
West Virginia had the highest percentage of drivers aged 70 and older, while the District of Columbia had the lowest. The study recommends that older drivers and their families be vigilant for signs of declining driving abilities, such as vision problems, slower reaction times, cognitive issues, and weakened grip strength.
