A Chicago Public Schools student was awarded $750,000 after a jury found his elementary school teacher complicit in arranging a violent assault. The incident occurred in 2018 at Tilton Elementary School, where 9-year-old Jo'maury Champ was allegedly dragged into a bathroom and beaten with belts provided by his teacher, Kristen Haynes. According to Champ’s testimony in a federal civil rights trial, Haynes facilitated the attack by arranging for a distant relative, Tyler, to carry out the beating.
Although Haynes was acquitted of criminal charges, she lost her job after the incident. Tyler, who was not a school employee, was convicted of misdemeanor domestic battery. The lawsuit, which also named the Chicago Board of Education, alleged that Haynes orchestrated the beating, although the reason behind the punishment remains unclear. Champ testified that both women were involved in dragging him into the bathroom, with Haynes leaving while Tyler allegedly beat him approximately 20 times. The trial took place six years after the 2018 assault.
