Fariba Moeinpour, a 62-year-old Iranian-born research scientist, was awarded over $3.8 million in damages after a Northern District of Alabama jury found the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) liable for nine years of racial harassment. Moeinpour accused UAB and a former data analyst, Mary Jo Cagle, of ongoing racial discrimination that began in 2011. The jury ordered UAB to pay $3 million, while Cagle was held personally responsible for $825,000 in damages. Moeinpour’s case highlighted her reporting of data falsification and subsequent physical altercations, which eventually led to her firing in 2020. UAB has expressed disagreement with the verdict and is considering its legal options.
